How Chinese Elites Slap in the Face of America
Last few years see quite some incidents where Chinese elites deal direct humiliations to the faces of their American hosts. It has become a fashion among some Chinese to seek clash with or to outsmart those "silly" and "naive" Americans, with zingers, tricks, designs, or even bluntness in public; sometimes just for fun, other times for nationalistic pride and applaud.
Such actions definitely contradict the values of traditional Confucianism, which advocates for humble, sensitive and respectful manners in being a |
guest; They are regarded as extremely malicious in Chinese society where face is such a big matter; in America they are perceived as against social grace.
